We try to eat healthy and like to eat organic when we can.
It’s hard.
Between work, bedtime, school, working out… who has time to eat healthy?? Then, I heard of Butcher Box. My friend got her first box and was ecstatic with it. I started following them on Instagram, watching their content and posts, and they even have a chef with a YouTube channel making recipes with their meats.
(You should really check out the YouTube channel – if nothing else for Chef Yankel! He’s pretty much adorable. You are welcome!)
What is Butcher Box?
Butcher Box is 100% grass-fed beef, organic free range chicken, and heritage breed pork. Their goal is to make clean meat accessible to as many people as possible. By partnering with a collective of small farms, they are able to deliver you the best products for less than $6 per meal.
Butcher Box is Healthy and Humane
The beef is 100% grass-fed and grass-finished and never given antibiotics or hormones.
All the cattle are humanely raised and live their entire life on pasture. Cattle eat their natural diet of grass and may receive other grasses like silage and hay when weather conditions prevent grazing.
Butcher Box exclusively sources from ranchers who humanely raise their animals and don’t interfere with their natural diet.
All of their chicken is certified humane meaning that chickens have access to the outdoors and to shelter, are naturally fed, have plenty of room to move and do what chickens naturally do (and interact with other chickens) and that stress at each stage of life is minimized.
The pork is either pastured or meets the following standards: raised in open barns with space to engage in natural behaviors and given bedding. No tail docking or other physical alterations are allowed.

Butcher Box is Fresh
The meat is frozen at the peak of freshness and individually vacuum-packaged. You’ll receive a tracking number the night your box ships. Look for your box on its due date and place in the freezer as soon as possible.
And did I mention shipping is free!?!
You can pick a mixed box, all beef box, or all chicken box. You can even customize your own package.
Between my friend’s glowing endorsement, the YouTube videos, and Instagram, I was convinced I had to try this box. We also live in a rural area, and it’s very hard to find quality meat in the stores. (Side note: Did you realize that there are areas considered “food deserts”?)
As I was considering the box, I saw an offer with free bacon and 2 extra filet mignon! I couldn’t pass it up! So I ordered the mixed box. This mixed box is truly what it says – a mix of beef, pork, and chicken.
It came nicely packaged. It is packed with dry ice (caution: don’t touch dry ice!). (All of the boxes are filled with a specific amount of dry ice that’s carefully calculated based on your geographic location.) Inside the packaging, is a nice logo insulated tote with the vacuum-sealed frozen meat.

The meat itself looks gorgeous. I’m excited it’s sealed at its absolute peak of freshness!!

And I’m sorry. Who doesn’t smile when they see #dingdongmoo on the side of this box??

Thawing Your Butcher Box Meat
The one thing I was concerned with is thawing out the meat. I was worried it would be a hassle. It was not at all. You can pull it down in the refrigerator the night before. (Pro tip: Put a plate under it because it can potentially leak a little, and you do not want that mess in your refrigerator!) If you are in a pinch, you can thaw it by placing it in a bowl of cold water and letting it slowly thaw that way.
The box looked awesome, came as promised, packaged with care – but does the meat actually taste good?
Butcher Box Meat Tastes Great
We’ve eaten almost all of the meat from our first box, and our second box is scheduled to arrive soon!
I can promise you it’s as delicious as you would hope! The first thing I made was the filet mignon, and it was amazing. I simply grilled it and served it with some asparagus and herbed new potatoes.
Honestly, one of the best meals I’ve ever made even though it was that simple.

We also had the bacon last night with poached eggs and hash browns. The bacon was perfect. It crisped up beautifully and tasted great. (My 8-year old ate 4 pieces, and tried to steal ours!)
If you want to try Butcher Box, I highly recommend doing it! You can always cancel if you don’t like your first box. (But, you won’t cancel because it’s amazing!) Also, if you sign up now, you can get FREE BACON FOR LIFE! And who turns down free bacon?!
